چکیده

Recent results in the foundations of probability theory indicate that a conditional probability can be viewed as a probability attached to a mathematical entity called a measure-free condit ional. Such a measure-free conditional can receive a semantics in terms of a trivalent logic and logical operations are defined on conditionals in terms of truth-tables. It is shown that these results can be useful to justify Cox's axiomatic framework for probability as well as its application to other theories of uncertainty (Shafer's plausibility functions and Zadeh's possibility measures). Moreover it is shown that measure-free conditionals have the properties of well-behaved non-monotonic inference rules.

On Non-monotonic Conditional Reasoning

This note is concerned with a formal analysis of the problem of non-monotonic reasoning in intelligent systems, especially when the uncertainty is taken into account in a quantitative way. A firm connection between logic and probability is established by introducing conditioning notions by means of formal structures that do not rely on quantitative measures. The associated conditional logic, co...

Combining Propositional Logic with Maximum Entropy Reasoning on Probability Models

We present a system for non-monotonic reasoning based on the probability calculus. This calculus incorporates this type of reasoning in two ways: Non-monotonic decisions (which can be treated as decisions under incomplete knowledge as well) can be the result of reasoning in a single probability model (via conditionalization) or in a set of probability models (via additional principles of ration...

A heuristic in rules-based systems

The aim of this paper is to present a probability measure associated to the set of complex formules of P (set of single logic propositions), CP. This probability measure will be used in the construction of heuristic algorithms in Artificial Intelligence problems. Throughout this work it will be seen how Knowledge Base Systems (KBS) act when they receive incomplete information. Calculation of KB...

Reasoning with Mass Distributions

The concept of movable evidence masses that flow from supersets to subsets as specified by experts represents a suitable framework for reasoning under uncertainty. The mass flow is controlled by specialization matrices. New evidence is integrated into the frame of discernment by conditioning or revision (Dempster's rule of conditioning), for which special specialization matrices exist. Even som...

Does Probability Have a Place in Non-monotonic Reasoning?

The panel on uncertain reasoning at AAAI-84 considered the question of whether or not implementations of non-monotonic reasoning should be probabilistic. A variety of (generally unsupported) claims were made to the effect that probabilities arc unintuitive, that the numbers needed arc unavailable, and that the method generally is inappropriate. The counterclaims that probabilities are intuit iv...
